TrackClip PRO

Recently we got sent the latest product from the
NaturalPoint range, the TrackClip PRO this was released in early December
of 2006 and aimed at bringing the user the most precise method of allowing
your TrackIR unit to track the movement of your head. The basic idea of
the TrackClip is to give the TrackIR unit 3 different reference points
which is can continually track with precision allowing the user total
control over their TrackIR unit.

As the name suggests the TrackClip clip's on to
your headset where it is out of the way line of vision and out of range of
being an annoyance to your face as there is a large gap between the
TrackClip and the users face. The actual unit itself is extremely light
but yet strong enough to last many years of use, because it is light this
means it will not be weighing one side of your head down or be in danger
of slipping its way down the arm of your headset.

The reference dots are suspended from a boom on
the actual body of the clip and are fully adjustable in movement so the
user can move the boom into the position that they want it to be in if it
will provide a better performance level for the tracking.

Anyway lets move on to the interesting bit of the
review, the setup and running of the TrackClip...

Using the TrackClip

The first thing that suprised me when I
took the TrackClip PRO out of the box that there was a USB power lead
attached the actual unit I expected it just to have some reflective
materials on the reference points that the TrackIR could pick up and use
to track the users head, there is a double USB connector on the
TrackClip unit, the TrackIR unit plugs into this USB socket and then
attached to that is another USB cable which plugs into the back of the
computer so that this one cable powers both the TrackIR unit and the
TrackClip unit. Not till i powered up the TrackClip for the first time
did I realise that on the actual reference points of the TrackClip are
little LED's which turn on once power is fed to the unit they are
visible as dim red dots to the human eye but are actually infra-red
lights, these are what is used to help the TrackIR unit to precisely
track a users head.

The next step was to download the latest TrackIR drivers as the latest
versions from December 2006 onwards now have the facility to accommodate
the TrackClip in its programming. The installation process was a simple
one and the actual software had not drastically changed from previous
versions so that people can adapt to it straight after install, its
simply a matter of telling the software that you are using a TrackClip
and then you are ready to use it!

Once everything was set up in the TrackIR software the next step in the
process was to attach the TrackClip to my headset, at the back of the
clip is a little level that you pull back and then pull the top section
of the clip up to open it, inside the actual clip on both sides is a
good quantity of foam padding so that the TrackClip is in no danger of
marking or damaging your headset when you are using it this also servers
as a good grip so that the unit will not slide up and down your headset
while you are moving your head frantically trying to shoot down the
opponent. Once the headset is placed inside of the clip the user simply
presses shut the two sides of the clip and it is then fully attached. I
then fully adjusted the clip to meet my needs for tracking, I was able
to do this because of course the boom on the clip is fully adjustable
from the arm, the reference points are also adjustable by twisting them
however this is not recommended greatly because of the delicate cables
housed inside can break easily when over used.

When I used the TrackClip in game for the first time there was a
significant difference from using the conventional dots supplied with
the TrackIR unit, anyone who is use to using the dots will notice a
significant advantage when using the TrackClip, one of which is you can
never lose a TrackClip but in my experience I have lost plenty of
tracking dots. The response from the TrackIR unit when using the
TrackClip as apposed to the tracking dots is very noticeable and of
course customisable through the positioning of the TrackClip.

My final words for the TrackClip is that for anyone who has lost
numerous tracking dots through the years  or/and is looking for a
significant performance increase from the TrackIR unit when tracking
your head, tired of wearing the supplied Trackhat the TrackClip PRO is a
must have accessory especially for the very reasonable price that the
unit is available for!
